In this French classic from director Marcel Carné, factory worker François (Jean Gabin) kills sleazy womanizer Valentin (Jules Berry), then retreats to his apartment to reflect on the events that drove him to murder as he waits for the authorities to arrive. François's desperation to help the woman he loves (Jacqueline Laurent) escape from Valentin's manipulative control has led him to this painful moment.
