Based on a story by Denis Diderot, this intricate French import follows the cruel machinations of moneyed socialite Hélène (María Casares), who sets out to destroy her shallow ex-lover Jean (Paul Bernard) after he admits to losing interest in her. Fueled by vengeance, Hélène orchestrates a wicked scheme to trick Jean into wedding a prostitute (Elina Labourdette). French auteur Jean Cocteau contributed to the film's lyrical dialogue.
