Love is crazy, as a veteran (Warren Beatty) finds out when he returns to his hometown to serve the needs of the mentally ill. His professionalism and caution about all-things romantic are tested when he meets his first client, the sexaholic schizophrenic Lilith (Jean Seberg). But when they wind up romantically involved, he questions his poor decision -- especially when he starts treating Stephen (Peter Fonda), a man who's also fallen for Lilith.
