This 1949 screen version of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel is packed with star power. Marmee Marach (Mary Astor) attempts to raise her four teenage daughters in a time of deprivation while her husband is away fighting in the Civil War. June Allyson is Jo, the tomboy bookworm; Margaret O'Brien plays the selfless Beth; Elizabeth Taylor portrays the artistic Amy; and Janet Leigh takes on the role of responsible Meg.
