Looking for Langston

  (1988)
Combining archival footage of Harlem's Cotton Club with photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, staged set pieces, fantasy sequences and an invented love story, director Isaac Julien provides a powerful meditation on the life of poet Langston Hughes. Exploring Hughes's role as a black gay icon, the film interweaves his work with that of others from and inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, including poets Bruce Nugent and Essex Hemphill.
