While searching for a mechanic job in the bleak economy of 1980s northern England, young Mick (Graham Green) splits his time between brawling and a budding romance with Karen (Carolyn Nicholson). Meanwhile, Mick's mate Alan (Tony Pitts) finds unexpected joy as a soldier in Northern Ireland. This characteristically gritty and unflinching drama from British director Ken Loach was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.
