Set in an industrial town in Northern England during the Depression, this raw drama follows the hard-knock life of Sally Hardcastle (Deborah Kerr), a young mill worker struggling to support her family amid poverty, unemployment and social upheaval. Plant workers including Sally's father, brother and boyfriend, Larry (Clifford Evans), lose their jobs, spurring violent worker demonstrations and changing the course of Sally's life.
