Spurred by her grandson's (Prithviraj Chaudhury) interest in the stories of her past, the widowed Mridula Chatterjee (Jaya Bachchan) looks back on the choices she's made, revisiting through vivid memories the people and places that have shaped who she is. In the process, she stirs up wistful recollections of an unrequited love (Om Puri), her daughter's (Shahana Chatterjee) troubled childhood and her own youthful innocence.
