After her husband commits suicide and with her career faltering, famous opera singer Caterina (Jill Clayburgh) moves to Italy with her teen son Joe (Matthew Barry), whose difficulty adapting to his new surroundings leads to heroin addiction. For her powerful performance as a mother desperate to save her lonely and depressed son, Clayburgh was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
