Beautiful waitress Elsie Townsend (Marley Shelton) and older, married Rick Chambers (Dennis Hopper) begin a torrid affair, which they try to hide from friends and neighbors in their small Southern town. But when Rick's ailing wife, Martha (Talia Shire), threatens to end the affair, Rick's passion for Elsie turns into obsession, and he begins crafting a murderous plan. Meanwhile, Elsie is busy devising her own dark deeds in this tense thriller.
