Levelheaded high schooler Matt Leland (Chris O'Donnell) falls for the seductive, impulsive and clinically depressed Casey Roberts (Drew Barrymore). When she's institutionalized after a suicide attempt, Matt breaks her out and they head for the open road searching for adventure. But Casey's mental condition soon clouds their idyllic odyssey with harsh reality. Matthew Lillard and Joan Allen costar in director Antonia Bird's portrait of young love.
