James Cagney sketches a vivid, dynamic picture of actor Lon Chaney in this slick Hollywood biography, which centers on Chaney's tumultuous personal life and ascent from cabaret clown to persevering Tinseltown extra to full-fledged movie star. This film also recreates many of the inscrutable cult star and master of disguise's renowned film characters, including the hunchback of Notre Dame and the phantom of the opera.
