Manhole Children

  (2008)
Over a 10-year period in the Soviet Union, this documentary follows three young residents who've retreated to a world beneath city streets -- and its extensive network of warming steam pipes -- to survive. Forced to shift to a capitalist economy overnight when the Soviet Union collapsed, Mongolia suddenly found nearly half of its population living in poverty -- and thousands of its children living underground, abandoned by desperate parents.
