Families of a small Nova Scotia mining town endure dangerous working conditions in this bleak drama. Set in the 1940s, the tale centers on Margaret MacNeil (Helena Bonham Carter), who's lost her father and brother to the coal mines. Against her mother's (Kate Nelligan) wishes, Margaret marries Neil (Clive Russell), who vows he'll never work in the mines.
