Margit Carstensen plays Martha, a woman left alone with her tyrannical mother after her cruel father dies suddenly. She decides she's better off marrying her suitor, Helmuth (Karlheinz Bohm) But that relationship provides no respite -- and may even do more damage. Rainer Werner Fassbinder directs this dark tale that skillfully interweaves black humor with truly terrifying psychological horror.
