Thirty years before Robert Altman redefined the English drawing room drama with Gosford Park, this beloved Masterpiece Theatre series chronicled the lives and loves of the aristocratic "upstairs" Bellamy family and their loyal "downstairs" servants. Set in early 1900s Edwardian England, by the time of the show's pivotal fourth season, World War I dominated the romantic, melodramatic storyline.
