One of Detective Lynley's (Nathaniel Parker) old school chums asks for his help in finding a boy missing from a boarding school. When the child is found murdered, Lynley, mindful of his own boyhood, is in a perfect position to understand the unique tensions of this closed caste. Meanwhile, Lynley's partner, Sergeant Havers (Sharon Small) is having problems dealing with the encroaching senility of her mother.
