Rebelling against the overbearing hand of his father, emperor Franz Joseph (Jean Dax), Austria's playboy crown prince, Rudolph (Charles Boyer), slips away and begins a passionate tryst with beautiful young baroness Marie Vetsera (Danielle Darrieux). But when Rudolph's autocratic sire forbids their affair, the lovers form a suicide pact. Anatole Litvak directs this tear-jerking romantic drama inspired by true events.
