Alan Rickman stars as Franz Mesmer -- a real-life historical figure who spawned the term "mesmerize" and made a dubious name for himself by using hypnotherapy to cure illnesses that were once thought to be incurable. Seen as both a miracle worker and a villainous charlatan, he tries to cure a beautiful young pianist (Amanda Ooms) of her blindness. But when he falls for his patient, Mesmer's reputation isn't the only thing at stake.
