Captured killer Johnny Lawler (a young Sam Elliott) persuades the sheriff's neglected wife, Molly (Vera Miles), to help him stage a jailbreak. But after Johnny and Molly flee into the desert, she learns that his sweet talk was merely a ruse to help him escape.
