This winner of three Screen Awards for acting examines the role of women in India through astute character studies of three women tied to the same family. A new bride longs for companionship with her unfeeling partner; her sister-in-law begins an affair when her husband ignores her; and a woman whose husband owes money sells herself to get it. A topical, well-received Hindi-language drama that strays from the Bollywood song-and-dance formula.
