Shirley MacLaine is Lucy Dell, an actress who disguises herself as a geisha in order to land a lead role in her director husband's (Yves Montand) film version of "Madame Butterfly." Assisting in her ruse is the film's producer, played by a well-cast Edward G. Robinson.
