A poet named Divakar (Mahipal) advances his art in the 18th century's waning days, a time in which India's wide-ranging kingdoms are falling to the British one by one. Divakar's ornate verse -- inspired by his fantasy muse -- soon earns him the coveted title of court poet. But his flights of fancy may ultimately cost him the love of his pragmatic wife, Jamuna (Sandhya), in director R.V. Shantaram's Bollywood classic.
