When her boyfriend, Dek (Rhys Ifans), proposes to her on national television, Shirley (Shirley Henderson) declines. Shirley doesn't realize, however, that her ex-husband, Jimmy (Robert Carlyle), was watching the show and has taken her rejection as an invitation for him to re-enter her life. But rekindling their love isn't easy when their adolescent daughter shows resentment, Dek puts up a fight, and Jimmy's criminal past comes to haunt him.
