He may play a clown on the rodeo circuit, but Virgil Kidder (Dwight Yoakam) is far from jolly. Ever since his line-in girlfriend abandoned him, Virgil has been keeping to himself, living on the road and staying away from his hometown. But he can't run forever, so he finally returns. At first, Virgil's life seems to make a turn for the better, but when his new girl (Cindy Pickett) winds up dead, his world is turned upside down again.
