Rip Torn gives the performance of a lifetime in this road movie about a country star on his way to Nashville for what he hopes will be a career-saving TV appearance. Projecting a gentle charisma on stage, Maury Dann (Torn) is in real life an egomaniacal monster with a propensity for booze, pills and women that could well be his undoing. Don Carpenter received a nod from the Writers Guild of America for his screenplay.
