Portrait of Maria

  (1944)
Maria Candelaria
This gritty drama takes a hard look at social mores and racism toward Indians in 1940s Mexico. Shunned by the people of her village because her mother once posed nude for an artist and was stoned to death as punishment, Maria Candelaria (Dolores del Rio) lives a solitary life punctuated by humiliating episodes with a racist thug (Miguel Inclan). Portrait of Maria won the Grand Prize and the Best Cinematography Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
