When Andie (Molly Ringwald), who lives with her unemployed father (Harry Dean Stanton), and Blane (Andrew McCarthy), who is rich and popular, strike up a romance, Blane meets resistance from his shallow best friend, Steff (James Spader), when he asks Andie to prom.
