In the early 1800s, an odd young woman (Phoebe Cates) speaking an unfamiliar tongue and wearing strange clothes gets arrested for vagrancy. She's taken in by the aristocratic Worralls (Jim Broadbent and Wendy Hughes), who -- along with Prof. Wilkinson (John Lithgow) -- believe her to be a foreign princess. Though a reporter named Gutch (Stephen Rea) has his doubts, he finds her hard to resist in this romantic mystery co-starring Kevin Kline.
