Orphaned Raja (Rajesh Khanna) takes to a life of petty crime, robbing houses in the middle of the night. One evening, as he eludes the cops, he masquerades as a groom and winds up marrying the lovely Nirmala (Sharmila Tagore). When the real groom dies and Raja escapes, Nirmala is branded a widow. But years later, fate reunites the pair. This time they fall in love, but Nirmala is living a sad life now -- and Raja is to blame.
