Sakura Nishi (Ayako Wakao) is a young army nurse who's sent to the field hospitals in China during the Sino-Japanese war in this film adaptation of a novel by Yoriyoshi Arima. In addition to experiencing the gruesome effects of combat firsthand, Sakura is assaulted by several patients. Alternating between brutal battlefield imagery and tender moments of emotional sacrifice, director Yasuzo Masumura's drama underscores the futility of war.
