Asked by the emperor to deliver official news while posing as a military officer, stablehand Gonzo (Toshiro Mifune) dons the fringe of a red lion's mane and returns to the village of his birth. But the good feeling he gets from telling the townsfolk about a brand-new tax cut is quashed when he learns that an evil magistrate has been swindling them for years. Now, to fight corruption at a local level, he'll have to unleash his samurai skills.
