At the height of the French Revolution, Charles D'Aubigny (Robert Cummings) is enlisted by a group of Lafayette-backed moderates to retrieve a black book containing evidence that could bring down the ruthless Robespierre (Richard Basehart). Working within severe budgetary constraints for a period piece, director Anthony Mann and cinematographer Robert Alton creatively impart a noir-ish B-movie feel to this overlooked gem from 1949.
