Rembrandt

  (1936)
In 1642 Holland, master painter Rembrandt van Rijn (Charles Laughton) enjoys a rich life as a well-known artist at the height of his fame. But with the sudden death of his beloved wife -- the model for many of his paintings -- Rembrandt's work takes a dark, sardonic turn that offends even his most loyal patrons. Bankrupt and bereft, he finds comfort in the arms of pretty servant Hendrickje Stoffels (Elsa Lanchester) in this first-rate biopic.
