Tony Church (Burt Reynolds) is a tough police detective assigned to bust a huge drug syndicate at a hotel. But when a masked robber barges in and a call girl (Liza Minnelli) gets caught up in the bust, Church gets blamed for the fiasco. Fired by the police department, Church begins working as a private detective, convincing the prostitute (the only surviving witness) to help him bring the killer to justice.
