Cranky, vain and cheap, Rupert Rigsby (Leonard Rossiter) treats the tenants of his run-down Yorkshire boarding house to regular insults and right-wing palaver, at the same time quietly pining for one of them: the well-educated Miss Ruth Jones (Frances de la Tour). Meanwhile, Miss Jones is carrying her own torch for another tenant, the dapper Philip Smith (Don Warrington), who claims to be descended from African tribal royalty.
