In a small town, the local sheriff (Dennis Hopper) and innkeeper (Mariel Hemingway) unknowingly harbor FBI informant Estaban Maceda (Chris Sarandon), who's on the run from his former boss, a narcotics kingpin (Miguel Najera) who's just been released from prison. Meanwhile, burned-out federal agent Gene Gere (Peter Coyote) is also looking for Maceda, and soon Maceda finds himself fleeing both the mob and the feds in this thriller.
