When straight-laced Beckman Hallsgood Jr.'s (Judge Reinhold) 1955 Thunderbird gets stranded in small-town Arizona after picking up hitchhiker Johnny (Willem Dafoe), life takes a strange and surreal turn. As they wait for the radiator to be fixed, the two meet a group of women and decide to enter a drag-racing contest against the band of hoodlums responsible for their car's breakdown.
