Jennifer Jones is the titular Ruby, a poverty-stricken woman in love with the rich Boake Tackman (Charlton Heston). Ruby's family thinks she's foolish to pine for someone who's obviously beyond her reach, especially one already betrothed to a girl who shares his high-society pedigree. Ruby settles for a down-to-earth man (Karl Malden) who's made a lot of money, but when he dies and Ruby makes a play for Boake, all eyes turn on his wife.
