Sixteen-year-old Steve (Austin O'Brien) lives in fear of his stepfather, an abusive alcoholic. Steve's mother (Susan Johnston), unable to leave her husband in spite of the violence, sends Steve away, and he finally winds up in a shelter for teenage runaways. Encouraged by his counselor, Tony (Jack Forcinito), Steve tries to turn his life around, but as he soon discovers, finding happiness and stability when you're all alone isn't easy.
