This Polish film from Andrzej Wajda tracks the psychological journey of a young man thrown in prison after he unintentionally kills a fellow student during a fight. The man is sprung from jail just as World War II is about to begin, but he soon finds himself behind bars again, this time in the slums of Warsaw. He breaks free, but is plagued by constant worries about being caught and locked up for good. Stars Serge Merlin and Alina Janowska.
