After recuperating from wounds he received saving his family from a charismatic cult leader, former cop Paul Thomas (Gary Cole) returns home to Santa Fe, N.M., and wins his job back, but finds that his wife (Sheila Kelley) is now shacking up with a local chiropractor (Jere Burns). With only his misfit pre-teen daughter happy to see him, disillusioned Paul becomes increasingly attracted to a free-thinking psychotherapist (Lolita Davidovich).
