Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr uses long takes and spare composition to evoke melancholy in this epic tale of an abandoned agricultural collective where a small band of lost souls struggles to eke out an existence. All the inhabitants -- including three couples and an alcoholic doctor -- want to leave, but none knows quite how, until a smooth-talking con man arrives with big plans and grand schemes to shake them out of their complacency.
