Renowned German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is accompanied by pianist Alfred Brendel in this 1979 performance of "Winterreise," widely regarded as Franz Schubert's greatest song cycle. This acclaimed vocal masterwork -- which was said to be Fischer-Dieskau's lifelong obsession and was recorded by him on several occasions -- tracks the journey of a scorned lover through a blinding winter snow, a passage that leads only to further alienation.
