Sergeant Rutledge

  (1960)
In this John Ford-helmed, landmark Western -- the first in its genre to feature an African American hero -- a military officer and his daughter turn up dead, and "witnesses" claim that Sgt. Braxton Rutledge (Woody Strode) is to blame. But is his real crime the fact that he's black? Escaping from prison during an Indian raid only to return to warn his fellow soldiers of an impending attack, he proves his honor despite the racism around him.
