As the end of the 19th century nears and the balance of power shifts from the shogunate to the emperor, farmer turned warrior Isami Kondo (Toshirô Mifune) leads the fierce Shinsengumi -- a small rebel army of peasants and farmers -- in a fight against the monarchy. Banding together, Isami and his men wage a bloody battle against the inevitable tide of change in this samurai epic also starring Keiju Kobayashi and Rentarô Mikuni.
