Police arrive at a crime scene to find two dead parents, a sleeping teenager (Liv Tyler) and an autistic boy gripping the murder weapon. To help the cops crack the case, a child psychologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and his wife (Linda Hamilton) must piece together clues locked deep within the child, who can only communicate by imitating others. But another doctor (John Lithgow) would rather coax the truth from the youngster by using drugs.
