The enchanting Romy Schneider stars as princess Sissi in this first installment of the romantic trilogy about life in the 19th-century Austrian court, in which Kaiser Franz Joseph (Karlheinz Böhm) falls in love with Sissi even though he is betrothed to her sister. This beloved and lavishly photographed period drama was directed by Ernst Marischka and also stars Vilma Degischer as Sissi's sharply demanding mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie.
