Nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, writer-director Tamara Jenkins's semiautobiographical dramedy follows fed-up teen Vivian (Natasha Lyonne) as she tries to survive her dysfunctional family while coming of age in 1970s California. She'd just as soon be rid of her washed-up dad (Alan Arkin), who wants to keep his kids in Beverly Hills "for the schools," and her fresh-from-rehab cousin (Marisa Tomei). But maybe they all need each other.
