Career burglar Max Dembo (Dustin Hoffman) tries to go straight when he's released from prison, but overzealous parole officer Earl Frank (M. Emmet Walsh) helps ensure he's soon back behind bars. After his second release, Dembo takes revenge on Frank -- and finds his old ways consuming his life once more.
